Potty Training

Yes this is my first post to my blog, but I finally got both my kids down for bed. I have a 3 year old daughter and a 5 month old boy. We just moved to SoCal and both have been through a lot in the past months, including us. So here it goes!

This week we are tackling potty training for my almost 3 year old girl. Of course I'm looking all over the internet for ideas and tips, but have to say advice from my friends was best! Here's some advice from my friend Lissy on potty training techniques:

1. Expect accidents. It's a process. We actually went to the park down the street the first day and that was kind of a mistake. Hoop dreams, the moment we got there, which it's about 1 block from our house my daughter went to bathroom. It's ok, we just turned around and came home.

2. Tackle night time later on, deal with daytime first.

3. Have rewards. We did a chart with smiley faces and Frozen stickers and also a small treat. Maybe give 2 of something for pee and 3 for poo.

4. Get an easy step stool for washing hands.

5. Get fun underpants! So your kids will be excited about them.

6. Ask her/him to go to the potty every 10-30 minutes. And use lots of encouragement, offer to go with them.

7. You will get resistance, but it's all a part of the process. Sometimes I just say I have to go and that she has to go with me.

8. Use pull-ups or diapers for bedtime/naptime.

So far charts work, stickers work, princess undies and lots of positive reinforcement from you the parent, family, friends...and of course Daniel Tiger episodes! We do get push back here and there, but the rewards seem enticing to her. I used small cookie reinforcements, which I switched to dry bananas for a healthier option. Going on day 3, we will see how tomorrow goes!
